Stanley's Beauty Contest

Written by: Linda Bailey

Illustrated by: Bill Slavin

This
book is mainly about this one dog called Stanley. In the morning, his
"people" give him a bath, clipped his nails, etc.
Then they just put him in the car without breakfast! All of a sudden, the car
stopped and they were at the park!! He wondered what was going. The other dogs said it was a beauty contest. Then all of a sudden
a woman with a batch of cookies came through, and the contest started.
First, it was a race but Stanley lost. Then it was a tricks contest but
he lost again. Stanley saw there was one more cookie left on the table
so he tried to get it but, tipped the table. Immediately, all of the
dogs made a huge dog pile, everyone after the last cookie. All their
people got mad and took their dogs everyone saying bad dog!! or in this
case bad-dog-Stanley. When they got home, his people noticed they forgot
about Stanley's breakfast so they gave him breakfast and dinner all in
one.

Answers to Questions

1. Who would benefit from reading this book?
Why? or How?

Honestly, I don't think people could really benefit
from this story that much. But, in the end it shows that dogs love
their people/owners. Some people may think that dogs are bad animals but
this book shows why dogs are called "Man's best friend". And, it’s also
easy to read. So, people learning how to read might benefit them
reading this book.

2. What was the purpose of writing this
book?

Im not sure but the book itself is really good. I’m
thinking it intended for little kids to learn how to read and good
character.

3. Who’s point of view is missing? What might they
have to say?

I think maybe a cat’s point of view is missing.
They’d probably be mad about the dogs but not all of them, but
definitely most.

4. What did the book make you think of?

It made me think of shadow, my dog. I love him but you know, once in a while he ticks me off. Like what happened in the book with all the dogs at the park.

5. Create 3 questions the book made you wonder about

Why did Stanley hate the banana shampoo so much?
Why do dogs like food so much?
What type of art style are the illustrations?
